shel 2

Now, in case I might lose you here, I assure you this little blog is not all about religion. I was born and raised a Roman Catholic and have observed the rules as best I could all my life. I suppose I’m still a Catholic but I now have a different connection with my ‘God,’ a direct line to ‘Him,’ a totally different concept of ‘Him’ and a much more rewarding spiritual experience.

You see, I was always searching for ‘God,’ wondering where he was when I needed him. I was told he was in Heaven, but where was Heaven? That was another huge question that I couldn’t answer. I saw the sorry state of the world. I saw the wars, the millions dying from famine and disease, the scourge of racism, the unequal distribution of recourses such as health, education, the massive wealth of some and the dire poverty of many. I began to wonder was my ‘God’ up there at all, and if he was, where was his sense of justice, his compassion and his love of mankind? I was told that all the chaos, devastation and suffering was man-made. Fair enough, but then I asked myself: who made man and why was the ‘slaughter of the innocents’ accepted as inevitable and allowed to continue in perpetuity?

Anyway, having failed to find answers to those questions, and still searching for some plausible explanations, I decided to have a chat with Doctor Google who responded in his usual prompt and efficient way. In no time I was showered with several books on the subject, written by world renowned thinkers, and having read them all, I found a new insight, not an answer to the world’s woes, but a discovery about myself that has transformed my thinking and changed my life.

There is a voice inside of you

That whispers all day long,

“I feel this is right for me,

I know that this is wrong.”

No teacher, preacher, parent, friend

Or wise man can decide

What’s right for you – just listen to

The voice that speaks inside.

shel 1

Those wonderful words of wisdom were written by the great American poet and author, Shel Silverstein.  When I reflect on the forces that influenced all my life’s decisions and actions, and ask the question: what was my guiding light?  I found the answer right there in Silverstein’s lines. All the directions of my life’s journey were taken after having consulted and listened to the voice that spoke to me from inside.

So, my next question was: who is this voice? What is the source of this wisdom? How powerful is this inner force? How could I use this power to change my life? I knew where to go for the answers. Doctor Google directed me. Books.  Yes, that’s where I’d get the information. I began my trawl but was not really sure what I was looking for, or what I would find. I was amazed at the discoveries I made and even more amazed that after a lifetime of ignorance of those fundamental truths, I was now only seeing the light.

Of all the books I read on this mystery power lurking within me, the one that really opened my eyes was: ‘The Power of Your Subconscious Mind’ by Dr Joseph Murphy. This man, born in Ireland, had made a lifetime study of spirituality and the subconscious mind. Having lectured throughout the world and written over thirty books, he was recognised as a renowned expert on the subject. He was a religious and prayerful man, had deep faith in ‘God,’ but believed that ‘God’ was in all of us in the person of the Holy Spirit, which is in fact our subconscious mind. That, he believed is where the infinite power comes from, but the control of it is with ourselves – with our thoughts and our imaginations.

This is his educated conclusion:

“Infinite riches are all around you if you will open your mental eyes and behold the treasure house of infinity within you. There is a gold mine within you from which you can extract everything you need to live life gloriously, joyously and abundantly. Many are sound asleep because they do not know about this gold mine of infinite intelligence and boundless love within themselves. Whatever you want, you can draw forth. You can bring into your life more power, more wealth, more health, more happiness and more joy by learning to contact and release the hidden power of your subconscious mind. You need not acquire this power; you already possess it. But you want to learn how to use it so that you can apply it in all departments of your life.”

“The law of the subconscious mind works for good and bad ideas alike. This law, when applied in a negative way, is the cause of failure, frustration, and unhappiness. However, when your habitual thinking is harmonious and constructive, you experience perfect health, success, and prosperity.”

shel 3

So, all of that gives me a much clearer understanding of God and how he works within me. Instead of diminishing my belief it has made sense of it and I know now that I have a creative power working within my being, responding to my thoughts and desires, my Holy Spirit to whom nothing is impossible.

It says to me that I am really are what I think. If I think good positive thoughts, good things will happen for me and if I have negative thoughts, bad things will result for me. I tried that for while and it worked one hundred per cent. Every morning I kept telling myself: ‘this is going to be a good day – nothing bad is going to happen to me today – I’m going to leave everything to the spiritual power working within my being – and I will be guided and directed in everything I think, everything I say and everything I do.

It worked so well that I became terrified to think bad or negative thoughts because I believed Dr Murphy when he said: “

“You must make certain to give your subconscious only suggestions which heal, bless, elevate, and inspire you in all your ways. Remember that your subconscious mind cannot take a joke. It takes you at your word.”

Suddenly I had a great deterrent against negative thoughts and a wonderful incentive to only think thoughts of love, harmony, health, peace and goodwill. But I have to say controlling your thoughts is not as easy as it sounds. Having good thoughts is easy enough but eliminating all those little wayward secret thoughts and those fears of doom and gloom takes a while to master. But I’m getting there and am already richly rewarded.

“Busy your mind with the concepts of harmony, health, peace, and good will, and wonders will happen in your life.”
