Pensively, I sit and ponder
At my old homestead of years gone by,
The thatch and walls spread near and yonder
In a sad, forlorn heap they lie.
Silently, as the tears are falling
I’m back to a boy again today,
The children in my ear are calling
Come on and join us in our play.
Joyously, I hear the laughter
Delightful sounds of fun and glee
A happy game of boisterous banter
Where else in the world would I wish to be?
But reality calls as I wake from my slumber
My parents and siblings have all gone their way
As I sit here alone, the last surviving member
In peaceful nostalgia, I wait for my day.
