The world according to Paddy – a great Irish story teller.
This is the quintessential Irishman. Born at home in County Wexford – the same county from which John F. Kennedy’s ancestors set off to the New World. Delivered by a midwife who arrived by bicycle and required a drink of whiskey before and after the delivery to guarantee good results. Raised in the crushing poverty and lack of opportunity that was the norm for most Irish at the time.
He was one of the lucky ones. His family was loving, pious and hard working. Although he left school at 13, he went on to successful careers as a dance band leader, a manufacturer of iron gates and trailers, a race horse owner and trainer, a guest house owner, a pub owner, and an insurance salesman. His involvement in Irish politics brought him into close contact with four Prime Ministers and left him disgusted, but with some very funny stories.
He and his children have benefited from the emergence of Ireland from an isolated agricultural society to a modern economy because Cummins goes at life full tilt and sees every defeat as a new opportunity. His success is no accident, but the natural results of his intelligence, hard work, and concern for others.
Now he’s retired, living in Malta, and this is his eleventh published book. His writing is simple and powerful and (God bless him!) when he uses an Irish word he immediately translates it for the benefit of readers not born in the Auld Country. My only criticism is that his chapters are mighty long, but I read the whole book in one sitting so it really wasn’t a problem. I can’t imagine a more entertaining, inspiring memoir.
