I love Co Clare, and have a particular soft spot for Killaloe. We love the Lakeside Hotel, which has amazing family facilities, and stunning views of Lough Derg. The rooms are big enough to do cartwheels in, as my six-year-old discovered the last time we were there.

Arriving Friday evening, a nice spot to head for a bite and a pint is Goosers Bar & Restaurant. Killaloe is such a great town to stroll around at any time of day, so we would probably have a nice walk back to the hotel, taking in the lakeside views.

I love mini road trips, so on Saturday, we would drive around Lough Derg. We might stop in Mountshannon, and maybe jump into a kayak and take a spin around the lake.

If we drive around all of Lough Derg, a lovely spot to stop for food is The Thatched Cottage Bar & Restaurant in Ballycommon.

Then, back to the hotel, to make the most of their swimming pool and its massive water slide.

Saturday night, we’d have dinner in Wood & Bell Restaurant & Cafe, which is great for vegetarians and kids! We would then walk over for a pint at the WasherWoman pub – technically in Co Tipperary – which has a lovely atmosphere and the best barmen on the planet.

On Sunday, before hitting the road, I wouldn’t miss brunch in the Wooden Spoon cafe. Then I’d head to the Killaloe Farmers’ Market, for locally produced food to bring back to Dublin.
