“I suppose most young girls dream about their father walking them up the aisle.”
As a newsreader for RTE, Eileen Dunne is a household name in Ireland. Still, little is known about her.
Here, she describes her favourite photo: the one that captures the moment her father, the late RTE sports broadcaster Mick Dunne, walked her up the aisle 24 years ago.
“For many that dream is never realised whether because their father was never a presence in their lives, had been but disappeared, or had passed away by the time the big day came,” she tells independent.ie.
“Luckily for me I got to have my dad walk me up the aisle of St John the Baptist Church, Clontarf, in August 1993.”
“I think this photo captures the moment, and because Daddy died in 2002, it’s even more poignant. I would never want to lose it.”
Eileen met her actor husband Macdara Ó Fátharta, an actor, through a mutual friend. On their wedding day, she walked up the aisle to the beat of the Artane Boys’ Band as they played Love Changes Everything.
“It was a lovely moment … we had had great fun at home with Mom and my sisters and my best friend Celine … then off we went in a lovely BMW driven by my good pal Donal Byrne.”
“Some of the locals had gathered outside the church so there were plenty of photos and banter before we went in, and then to the strains of Love Changes Everything played by the Artane Boys’ Band, up we went!”
“I took off at a gallop apparently, but it is very emotional when you see all those faces gathered just for you, and my future hubby at the top of the church, smiling nervously.”
